Abstract:
During the Second Sino-Japanese War, the number of deaths increased sharply, the cross-border burial tradition established in the late 19th century was blocked, and burial welfare from some Chinese social organizations were reduced or even cancelled, all of which broke the social and moral order of Macao. Proper burial of deaths has become the common concern of the Macao government and the society. This lecture discusses the practice of the Macao government and the Chinese community in burials of the dead in order to reflect the diversity and complexity of charity in Chinese society.
About the Speaker:
Dr. MAO Di serves at the Division of GE, HSS, CUHK-Shenzhen. She is teaching Modern Chinese History and Culture, Social History of Canton-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and joint-offering course Lingnan: History and Society with CUHK. Her research interests include social history of South China, history of charity, history of Chinese migrants.
