History Minor FAQ(AY 2024-2025 )
Q: What are the requirements for history minor programme?
A: You can find the current course list at https://registry.cuhk.edu.cn/en/page/248
Q: How do I declare the history minor?
A: You can declare the minor to the School of Humanities and Social Science (HSS) during the declaration period each term, usually within the week after add-and-drop. You will need to submit an application once you have completed the 3 mandatory courses and 3 elective courses. You may also submit a provisional application if you expect to complete the 6 required courses by the end of the term. Provisional applications will be processed when you have completed the courses at the end of the term.
Q: How frequently will the required courses be offered?
A: The history minor is new, and our teachers are also obligated to offer the required GE courses like GEA and Foundations, but we are working hard to make sure that we offer the required courses frequently enough so that most interested students can complete the minor. Normally, at least one compulsory course will be offered each term.
For the academic year 2024–2025, the courses GEC2109 ‘Tradition and Transformation in Chinese History’ (English version) and GEC2110 ‘Tradition and Transformation in Western History’ (English) will be taught in autumn 2024. GEC2108 ‘The Historian’s Craft’ (English) will be taught in the spring term of 2025.
We will update our teaching plan for the academic year 2025–2026 once the schedule is confirmed. Please check our updates in the summer of 2025 before course enrolment starts.
Q. How should I plan for my study if I want to declare the history minor?
We strongly recommend students who are interested in the history minor certificate take the compulsory courses as early as possible. Ideally, they should have finished two compulsory courses before the final year of their studies. This is because students usually have other priorities in the final year. If you are applying for post-graduate programmes, taking the courses earlier will also help to convince admission committees that you have spent enough time studying history and have a strong commitment. In the case, if you must take three compulsory courses in one year, please check our annual teaching plans early and schedule for enough time in each term.
Q: How should I study the History Minor apart from taking the courses?
A: The History Seminars are a most exciting venue and precious opportunity for students to observe history research at work, to learn about the cutting-edge diverse fields of academic historical research, to participate in the exchange of ideas among academics, and to learn directly from researchers. We organize three seminars each term. Please stay alert to the seminar postings and emails.
Q: Whom should I approach if I have questions?
A: For any questions, please feel free to contact ge@cuhk.edu.cn. Please describe your questions in detail if possible.
